DHR INTERNATIONAL PLACES CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AT THE ASSOCIATION OF SCIENCE-TECHNOLOGY CENTERS, INC. (ASTC)

Washington, DC, September 2009 – Global executive search firm DHR International (DHR) is pleased to announce the placement of Anthony (Bud) Rock as Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, Inc. (ASTC). James Abruzzo, Managing Director of the DHR Nonprofit Practice, led the search.

In the letter to the ASTC membership, Lesley Lewis, ASTC board chair, wrote, “Through a competitive bid process, ASTC retained the Nonprofit Practice of DHR to assist with its CEO search.  ASTC was seeking science center leaders and other professionals who had a broad international view and knowledge and respect for the value of science. Together with ASTC - and with extensive consultation from the field - DHR created a detailed and dynamic job description that was approved by the board; it outlined the future needs of ASTC, mirrored the important facets of ASTC's strategic priorities and set the bar extraordinarily high for leadership in the following months. DHR, in collaboration with the ASTC Search Committee, sought out and assessed potential candidates.  The goal of the committee was to recommend a successor who would be approved by the board and who could begin his or her tenure prior to the ASTC annual conference in late October.”

Mr. Rock joins ASTC from Arizona State University (ASU), where he served as Vice President for Global Engagement and Professor of Practice. In this role he was responsible for raising the global awareness of the student body and promoting the university's research and educational agenda across the world.  Prior to his tenure at ASU, Mr. Rock spent two decades with the U.S. Department of State. During his last five years with the State Department he was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Science, Technology and Health, where he was responsible for coordinating, managing, and advocating for global programs involving science-based federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, for-profit entities, and their non-U.S. counterparts.
